My Last Business Trip in Japan for the Year 2000
by Noel Ching Allosa

The Business Trip

Spectral Wave 160 (SPWV160) was my new assignment when I was send to Fukuoka, Japan for project development.  This was my 10th Trip in Japan since 1997.  The 3rd Business Trip for the year 2000.  I started my business trip on Oct 22 just two days before my daughter was born.  On the next day (Dec 17) I'll be going back to Philippines.  I am very much excited because for the first time I could see my almost two(2) months old daughter.  And also my wife and my 1 year and 2 months old son.

The Project

A Craft Interface Device (CID) is a user-friendly interface that allows you to communicate with network elements (NEs). Using a CID greatly simplifies the task of performing operation, administration, maintenance, and provisioning (OAM&P) activities for NEs. Performing these activities without a CID is cumbersome and difficult. Manually entering TL1 commands, analyzing responses, and making decisions is time consuming and tedious. The complicated syntax of the TL1 language makes errors likely, and re-training is required whenever the TL1 language is modified. The CID for SpectralWave is a Microsoft Windows application that simplifies OAM&P activities for the SpectralWave160 NE.  Using Microsoft Visual C++ 6.0, Introducing XML Technology and Team Work we believe that we were able to produce another NEC Quality Software.

The Work and Pressure

The first batch of engineers send for Business Trip was me, Leonardo Artiaga Jr and Christopher Tan.  We find a hard time for the first two(2)week since the platform engineers (communication side) was still in Philippines.   Countless bugs (program error) poping anytime during testing. Our average time out was 12 midnight and time-in was 8:30 almost (1 out of 6).   My average sleep was 1:00AM thinking about project solution and watching interesting late Japanese TV Show. My total overtime for two(2) months is 221 hours.

Engineers After Tight Schedule of Japanese Work Style

We already made a plan to visit SpaceWorld a place of hair raising rides.  Plan was already there and can not be cancel even it rain or shine.  We work saturday thinking we could go home at most 12Midnight because the next day is our SpaceWorld Ga-Roll Time but sad to think we work until 5:16AM and we must catch the bus before 8:00AM and train to SpaceWorld.  We first try the most screaming rides VENUS.

The Meeting for Christmas Vacation Work Plan

Just week before our going home Mr. Fujise meet us and request us to work Dec 26-30.  We all shock especially to those who had already their plan this coming December Break.  Me, Leonardo and JayJohn is not so big deal because we will spend our December break in Cebu.  Otep want to go home(Davao) to spend his Christmas Vacation.  Very long negotiation was made.  We are angry and also Mr. Fujise.  We understand the important of project but I think only his approach was not correct.  The way he talk, the way he say it and the way he judge our response.  After a long negotiation and with the help of Mr. Ogura (NEC Phils) at last Otep can go home.  Me, Leonard, Chris and Jay John will work on Dec 26 to Dec 30, 2000.
